Bacalar Legends and Colors

5.0 5 avis vérifiés

Bacalar, often called the lagoon of seven colors for the way its water shifts between shades of blue and turquoise, is the centerpiece of this full-day trip through southern Quintana Roo. The itinerary combines swimming, boat travel along a canal tied to regional pirate history, a stop on a quiet island, and a visit to a colonial-era fort, making it less a single activity and more a tour through several distinct sides of the town.

The day starts with a swim in Bacalar's shallow, clear water, giving you time to actually experience the color and clarity the lagoon is known for before moving on to the next stop. From there the group travels to the Pirate Canal, where accounts of the pirates who once navigated these waterways and fought over the region's riches are shared, adding a layer of local history to what is otherwise a scenic stretch of water.

The pace slows at Isla Pajaros, a small island where the plan is simply to sit by the water and take in the surroundings after the more active parts of the morning. The day then wraps up at San Felipe Fort, an 18th-century structure built originally to defend the town from pirate attacks and a key site in the region's history, rounding out the trip with a look at the built history behind the stories told earlier at the canal.

Given the trip runs a full day and includes travel time within its total duration, it suits travelers who don't mind a longer day out in exchange for covering multiple sites in one trip. The tour notes that at least a moderate level of physical fitness is expected and that it is not recommended for those with spinal injuries or for pregnant travelers, so it leans toward travelers who are reasonably active rather than those looking for a fully passive day. Infants are required to sit on an adult's lap, making it workable for families traveling with a baby, though not ideal for those needing a separate seat for a small child.

Bottled water, snacks, lunch, and travel in an air-conditioned vehicle are included, covering the essentials of a long day away from your hotel. Because the tour also involves a boat portion on the Pirate Canal, an additional balance of 42 USD per participant is collected separately to cover admissions, rentals, fees, and maritime transport, so it's worth budgeting for that on top of the base cost. Pack a swimsuit and sun protection for the lagoon swim, along with anything else you'd want for a day that moves between water, an island, and a historic fort.

Pickup logistics are specific to this tour: it only operates out of the Riviera Maya area, running along the corridor from the Generations hotel toward the Sirenis hotel, and the operator does not service boutique addresses, hotels, motels, hostels, or Airbnbs, nor difficult-to-access areas such as downtown Playa del Carmen or Tulum City. Given that restriction, travelers staying outside the standard pickup corridor should contact the operator directly with their exact location to confirm whether pickup is possible before booking.
