Discover Chichén Itzá & Cenote. Lunch and transport included
L'expérience
East of Cancun and the Riviera Maya, the Yucatan interior holds one of the most recognizable ruins on the continent: Chichen Itza. This full-day outing pairs a guided walk through the ancient Mayan city with a swim in a jungle cenote and a stop in the colonial town of Valladolid, combining archaeology, freshwater swimming, and small-town wandering into a single round trip with lunch and transportation built in.
The day centers on a two-hour visit to Chichen Itza, where a certified guide leads the group through the archaeological zone, pointing out the structures that made this city one of the most influential centers of Mayan civilization and explaining the events that eventually led to its abandonment. There is built-in time within those two hours to linger at the main plazas, photograph the pyramid and ball court, and take in the scale of the site at a pace that is not rushed.
From the ruins, the group heads to a cenote for a swim, either Chichikan or Noolha depending on how the day's logistics fall. Chichikan is described as an open-air pool ringed by limestone walls, while Noolha has a more enclosed, cave-like setting with calm blue water; either way, the hour set aside here is for entering the cool, clear water, floating beneath the jungle canopy, and taking a break from the midday heat before the group moves on to Valladolid, one of the Yucatan's Pueblos Magicos. Here the pace slows further: a half hour to walk the streets and central square, admire the colorful facades, browse the shops, and pick up local handicrafts as souvenirs.
This itinerary suits travelers who want a single day to cover the region's headline sites without renting a car or piecing together separate tours. Because it moves through three distinct settings, ruins, cenote, and town, it works well for first-time visitors to the Yucatan who want a broad introduction rather than a deep dive into any one location. The tour is marked wheelchair accessible and suitable for all physical fitness levels, and infants are welcome as long as they sit on an adult's lap, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or those who are pregnant, given the walking, swimming, and time in the sun involved.
Transportation runs round trip from hotels throughout the Riviera Maya, covering Playa Mujeres, Cancun, and Puerto Morelos, as well as Playa del Carmen; travelers staying in Tulum are given a designated meeting point instead of hotel pickup. Pickup time is confirmed after booking based on the hotel's location, so it is worth having your hotel name ready to share so the operator can send exact timing.
A buffet lunch, transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle, the guided visit to Chichen Itza and its certified guide, the cenote swim, and a brief stop in Valladolid are all included in the price. Drinks and a boxed lunch are not part of the standard package, though they can be added by upgrading to the Deluxe option. At the cenote, life vests and lockers are available for an extra charge and must be paid in cash, and travelers bringing a professional or GoPro camera into Chichen Itza should be aware that the site charges a separate camera tax. The Chichen Itza archeological entrance fee itself is also not included and is paid separately. Given the swimming stop, pack a swimsuit and a towel, and dress for a day that moves between an open archaeological site, a jungle cenote, and a walkable town square.
