Half-Day Tour to Ventanilla, Mazunte, Zipolite and Puerto Angel

This half-day tour departs from Huatulco and threads together four distinct stops along the Oaxacan coast: the Ventanilla lagoon and its crocodile sanctuary, the village of Mazunte, the Zipolite lookout, and the beach town of Puerto Ángel. It's a ground transportation tour, roughly seven hours door to door, built to show the biodiversity of this stretch of coastline through stops connected to environmentally friendly ecotourism programs.

The day starts with pickup at your hotel lobby, followed by a roughly one-hour transfer toward Ventanilla. At the ecological park La Ventanilla, a guide leads you through a lagoon lined with mangroves that is home to a crocodile sanctuary. Along the way you'll learn about the conservation programs protecting two of the area's signature species: crocodiles and white-tailed deer.

From Ventanilla, the tour continues to Mazunte, a pueblo mágico on the Oaxacan coast. Here you'll visit a cooperative run by local women who produce organic cosmetics, and sample regional food and drink — mezcal, chocolate, coffee, mole, quesillo, and chapulines (toasted grasshoppers), among other local staples.

Next comes a short stop at the Zipolite Letters lookout, where you can take in a sweeping view over the coastline, before continuing to Puerto Ángel. There you'll have time for a swim at the beach and, if you choose, lunch on your own (lunch is not included). The tour then heads back to Huatulco, closing the loop with another roughly hour-long transfer.

Because it covers four stops in about seven hours, with two vehicle transfers of roughly an hour each at either end, this tour suits travelers who want a broad first look at the coast beyond Huatulco — nature, a local village economy, a viewpoint, and beach time — in a single guided outing, rather than travelers looking to linger for hours at any one stop.

The vehicle is air-conditioned, and infants are required to sit on an adult's lap. The tour isn't recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health or for pregnant travelers, though it's described as suitable for all physical fitness levels otherwise. Pickup is at your hotel lobby. Brunch and admission fees to the sites visited are not included, so budget for those separately, and if you plan to have lunch in Puerto Ángel, bring cash for it.
