Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about destinations around Tulum

What are the best beaches in Tulum?

expand_more
Tulum has diverse beaches for every taste. Playa Paraíso is world-famous for its turquoise Caribbean waters and white sand. Playa Ruinas offers stunning views beneath the Mayan ruins. Akumal is beloved for snorkeling with sea turtles. Playa Pescadores is a lively local beach. Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve has pristine, unspoiled stretches of Caribbean coastline.

Is it safe to swim at the beaches in Tulum?

expand_more
Most Tulum beaches are safe for swimming as the Caribbean Sea is generally calm with warm, clear water. Playa Paraíso and Akumal are excellent for swimming and snorkeling. Some beaches near the open coast can have currents — always check local conditions and look for red/green flag warnings at hotel beaches.

What day trips can I take from Tulum?

expand_more
Popular day trips include: Cobá ruins (climb the tallest pyramid in the Yucatán), Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve (boat tours, wildlife), Chichén Itzá (one of the New Seven Wonders), Cenote Dos Ojos (cave diving), Akumal (snorkeling with turtles), Bacalar Lagoon (seven-color lagoon), and Playa del Carmen (shopping and nightlife). Most can be done in half or full day.

Can I see bioluminescence near Tulum?

expand_more
Yes! The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve and certain lagoons near Tulum offer bioluminescence tours at night. The phenomenon is caused by dinoflagellates in the water that glow when disturbed. It's best on moonless nights. You kayak or swim through the warm Caribbean lagoon water while it glows electric blue around you — a truly magical experience.

Where can I see sea turtles in Tulum?

expand_more
Akumal Bay is one of the best places in the world to snorkel with wild sea turtles year-round — green turtles feed on the sea grass just offshore. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve also has turtle nesting programs. Many beaches in the area have community-run hatcheries where you can participate in baby turtle releases at sunset during nesting season (May–October).
