La Veleta is a residential neighborhood on the inland, jungle side of Tulum Pueblo, spreading south and west from the town center, away from the highway and the coast. Two decades ago most of it was low bush and empty lots; over the past ten years it has become one of the fastest-growing parts of Tulum, filling in with low-rise condo buildings, small guesthouses, and long-term rentals. The character is still noticeably unfinished, in a way many visitors like. Most of the streets are unpaved sand and limestone rather than asphalt, vegetation grows thick between the buildings, and construction stays low — there are no beachfront towers here, and much of the neighborhood is only a few storeys tall. It is quieter at night than the town center, and darker, since street lighting is patchy. La Veleta is where a large share of Tulum's foreign residents, remote workers, and longer-stay visitors are based. That has shaped what opened here: coworking spaces, specialty coffee shops, yoga and wellness studios, small bakeries, and independent restaurants, most of them scattered along residential streets rather than concentrated on a single strip. It reads as a neighborhood people live in rather than a resort district. The trade-off is that La Veleta is inland and has no beach of its own. Reaching the Caribbean means crossing the town and taking the beach road out to the Zona Hotelera — straightforward by car, scooter, or bicycle, but not something you do on foot. The town center itself, with the ADO bus terminal, supermarkets, banks, and the main run of restaurants, is only a few minutes away. Bicycles and scooters are the normal way to get around, and the flat terrain makes cycling easy. The unpaved roads are the main caveat: they turn rough and muddy after heavy rain, so a bike or a taxi is often more practical than a low-clearance rental car on the smaller streets.
