Akumal means "Place of the Turtles" in Mayan. Resident green sea turtles feed on the sea grass beds in this sheltered bay, 25km north of Tulum. Swimming alongside them in crystal-clear Caribbean water is unforgettable.
The Turtles
Green turtles are present year-round in the inner lagoon. Morning sessions typically yield 5–15 encounters in a 20–30 minute swim. Snorkeling guides dramatically improve your chances while ensuring respectful distances.
The Bay
Protected by a natural coral reef, the water is unusually calm — ideal for beginners and children. The reef also hosts tropical fish, rays, and moray eels. Snorkel rental is available at beach entrance.
Getting There
25km north of Tulum on Highway 307. Colectivo from Tulum Pueblo: ~30 minutes, 25–35 pesos. Arrive before 9am for best turtle encounters. Small beach access fee applies.
