Laguna Bacalar — the Lake of Seven Colors — is one of Mexico's most extraordinary natural wonders. This 42-kilometer-long lake shimmers through every shade of blue and turquoise, from the palest aquamarine in shallow areas to deep sapphire in the channels. Located about 2 hours south of Tulum in Quintana Roo.
The Colors
The color variations are caused by differences in depth, underground cenotes feeding the lake, and the white sand lake bed. On a clear day with still water, it looks like a living Pantone chart of blues — neon turquoise in the shallows, deep navy in the channels.
Activities
Sailing on a catamaran through the channels is the quintessential experience. Cenote Azul — an open-water cenote connected to the lake — offers exceptional swimming. The town has a beautifully restored Spanish fort (Fuerte San Felipe). Kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing lessons available.
From Tulum
~2 hours south by car or ADO bus. Day trips are manageable — depart Tulum by 8am, full afternoon on the lake, return by evening. Excellent boutique hotels and glamping options along the shore for overnight stays.
