Private Surf Lessons at Cerritos

Cerritos Beach is one of the few beaches in Baja California Sur that reliably offers surfable waves for a wide range of skill levels. Open to the Pacific swells, it draws both beginners and experienced surfers through much of the year. This private lesson puts you one-on-one with an instructor on that beach, with the coaching, pacing and wave selection adjusted to you.

Cerritos tends to be a more forgiving place to learn than many surf destinations, where conditions can feel intimidating for a first-timer. The private format lets the instructor adapt technique to your level, whether you are standing on a board for the first time or already riding waves and looking to sharpen your surfing.

The session begins on land. Once you arrive at Cerritos Beach and meet your instructor, you go through an introduction covering safety, paddling, wave selection and proper technique before you enter the water. From there the lesson is hands-on, with coaching tailored to your experience and to the ocean conditions of the day. The lesson lasts about 2 hours. Afterwards you can relax over lunch at Big Fun Beach Club, overlooking the Pacific, before heading back toward Los Cabos.

This is a good fit for beginner, intermediate and advanced surfers, provided you have basic comfort in the water and at least a moderate level of physical fitness. The minimum age is 6. It is not recommended if you have back problems, are pregnant or have a serious heart condition, and participants under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not allowed. Surf lessons run seasonally, roughly from November 15 through March 15, depending on swell conditions.

All the surf equipment is included: surfboard, rashguard, beach chairs and an umbrella setup, plus lunch and complimentary round-trip transportation from selected areas in an air-conditioned vehicle. Transportation from the Cabo San Lucas area takes roughly one hour. If you want a specific board size, a fiberglass board or a wetsuit, let the operator know at least 24 hours ahead; wetsuits are available on request in the winter months. Bring your own towel, and keep in mind that alcoholic beverages, gratuities and personal expenses are not included.

Pick-up is from hotels in Cabo San Lucas and the Tourist Corridor. If you arrive in your own vehicle, you can meet directly at the Big Fun Beach Club parking area at Cerritos Beach. Hotels outside the main tourist area, such as Hard Rock, Nobu, Rancho San Lucas, Diamante or Four Seasons, and cruise guests meet at Plaza Gali OXXO in Cabo San Lucas. There are no lockers, but belongings can usually stay in the vehicle during the lesson.
