If you book your ticket online in advance, you can secure significant discounts. The journey takes approximately 13 hours, so an overnight bus makes perfect sense — you sleep and wake up in Chiapas. The first evening departure is usually around 6:30 p.m. and the last around 9:30 p.m. There is no catering service on board, so pack your own snacks and a light blanket for the cooler highland air at the other end.

• The most independent option: car

If you love road trips and want to stop wherever curiosity takes you, renting a car is a great choice. The drive from Tulum to San Cristóbal covers roughly 623 km through the Yucatán Peninsula and into the highlands of Chiapas — plan for around 9 hours of driving time. If time is short and budget allows, fly from Cancún International Airport (CUN) — the nearest major airport to Tulum, about 1.5 hours away by car or ADO bus — to Ángel Albino Corzo International Airport in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, the capital of Chiapas. From Tuxtla you can take a combi (shared van) or a private taxi up the winding mountain road to San Cristóbal, a journey of about 1.5 hours. Total travel time door-to-door is roughly 5–6 hours depending on your flight and connections.
