ATV Single, Tulum Ruins & Underground Cenote from Cancun

This tour combines two very different sides of the Riviera Maya in a single day: the archaeology of the walled Maya port city of Tulum, perched on cliffs above the Caribbean, and an off-road ATV ride through the jungle that surrounds it. Departing from Cancún or Riviera Maya hotels, the itinerary is built around contrast — structured cultural time at the ruins followed by an unstructured, physical adventure through the trails and a cenote nearby.

The day opens at the Tulum Archaeological Zone, where a guide walks the group through the site's main structures, including El Castillo and the Temple of the Frescoes, explaining Tulum's history as a trading port for the ancient Maya. The visit takes place with the Caribbean coastline as a constant backdrop, and this portion of the day runs for about two hours, giving enough time to move through the site's history at a walking pace while also taking in the view that makes Tulum one of the most photographed sites in the region.

From the ruins, the group heads into the Tulum jungle for the ATV portion of the day. Riders take single ATVs along rugged off-road trails through dense tropical vegetation, safety equipment included, covering ground that a standard sightseeing tour wouldn't reach. After the ride, the group cools off with a swim in an underground cenote, a covered pool with visible stalactite and stalagmite formations and clear water — a contrast to the dust and heat of the jungle trail just completed. This adventure segment also runs about two hours, split between riding and time to swim.

This tour is built for travelers who want more than a walking tour of ruins — anyone looking to combine the cultural stop with a physical, outdoor activity rather than a purely relaxed day. Riders must be at least 16 years old to drive an ATV (after a brief skill test), with a minimum pilot height of 1.5 meters and 1.3 meters for a co-pilot; companions on the ATV must be at least 8 years old. The trip is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers, given the physical nature of off-road riding, though it's otherwise described as suitable for all fitness levels.

Given the mix of dirt trails and cenote swimming, comfortable clothes and closed shoes are recommended for the ATV ride, along with a swimsuit, towel, and a change of clothes for afterward. Included in the day are hotel pickup and drop-off from Cancún and Riviera Maya, the guided visit to the Tulum archaeological zone, the ATV ride with safety equipment, cenote access, a bottle of water, and a light snack of juice, bread, and coffee.

Not included are lunch and any additional beverages beyond what's provided, optional ATV insurance (available for 15 USD), and photo or video services if travelers want professional images of the ride. There is also a separate Tulum preservation tax of 20 USD per person, paid locally and not bundled into the tour price. Travelers should plan to cover a midday meal on their own once the tour wraps up.
