Discover ancient Mayan life at Chichen Itza Ruins and 2 cenotes
The experience
The pyramid of Kukulkan rising out of the Yucatan jungle is one of the most recognized silhouettes in the Americas, and this full-day outing gets you there along with two of the region's most photogenic cenotes and a stop in a colonial town known for its dance and music traditions. Rather than treating Chichen Itza as a quick photo op, the itinerary builds in real time at the ruins, a pair of swims in sacred sinkholes, a Mayan village visit, and a lunch that ends the day with a live performance in Valladolid.
The morning is dedicated entirely to Chichen Itza. A bilingual guide leads the group among the pyramids and pre-Hispanic structures for about an hour, explaining how the ancient Maya built and used the site, and each traveler is loaned an umbrella for the walk across the exposed archaeological zone. A further hour of free time lets you wander back through the plazas at your own pace to take photos or simply absorb the scale of the place before heading to the vehicle.
From the ruins, the group travels to Cenote Ik Kil, an underground pool reached through a shaft in the jungle floor where sunlight drops in from an opening above. A vest is provided and you get about an hour in the water. The stop at the Hubiku eco-park cenote follows the same rhythm: a sacred, spring-fed pool where sunlight filters through a hole in the cavern roof, and time to swim before a regional buffet lunch is served on-site. A short visit to a Mayan village and a tequila tasting are also worked into the day, along with a boxed lunch of juice, sandwich, and fruit.
The day wraps in Valladolid, a colonial town with roughly 30 minutes set aside for a panoramic visit past landmarks such as the Convent of San Bernardino de Siena and the Cathedral of San Gervasio. Lunch here comes with a folkloric show of regional dance performed to live music, plus free time to explore the streets before the ride back to your hotel.
Because the tour mixes archaeology, swimming, and a cultural finale, it works well for travelers who want a single day to cover several of the Yucatan's signature experiences without planning separate excursions. The wheelchair-accessible transportation and site access, along with the note that it's suitable for all physical fitness levels, make it a reasonable choice for groups with mixed mobility, though the two cenote stops mean everyone should be ready to get in the water.
Pack a swimsuit and towel for both cenotes, since vests are provided but not swimwear, and bring cash if you want drinks with lunch, as beverages at the restaurant aren't included. Photography fees apply if you're carrying a professional camera or GoPro into Chichen Itza, and backpacks aren't permitted inside the archaeological site, so plan what you carry accordingly. Pickup runs on a single early-morning window between 6:30 and 7:30 am, with Riviera Maya hotels picked up between 8:00 and 8:30 am; the operator will confirm your exact time by email or text once you provide your hotel name.
