Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and Valle de Bravo Day Tour

Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and Valle de Bravo Day Tour

5.0 1 verified reviews

This day tour combines the Piedra Herrada Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary with a visit to Valle de Bravo and the Velo de Novia waterfall, aimed at families, couples, nature enthusiasts, and photographers looking to fit several of the area's highlights into one day.

At Piedra Herrada, a guided walk takes you through a forest of oyamel trees, home to millions of monarch butterflies during the winter season. You can hike up the mountain trail or ride a horse instead, and once at the protected area, you have time to observe the butterflies clustered in the trees and flying around the sanctuary while your guide explains their migration and the importance of protecting their habitat.

From there, the tour continues to the Velo de Novia Waterfall, where a light walk through the natural park leads to viewpoints over the more than 30-meter waterfall. It's a quieter stop, with time to walk the trails, take in the river and surrounding forest, and rest or have a snack.

The day finishes in Valle de Bravo itself, with a walk through the historic downtown's cobblestone streets, past local shops, handicrafts, and colonial-style buildings. Stops include the Main Square and the Parish of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Santa María Ahuacatlán Sanctuary — home to the Black Christ, one of the town's most important religious symbols — and the lakeside pier, with views over the lake, mountains, and boats.

Free time is built in for lunch and personal exploration, including the chance to shop for souvenirs, have a coffee, or simply relax before heading back.

Because it involves mountain hiking, this tour calls for at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and it's not recommended for very young children or people with limited mobility. Infants are required to sit on an adult's lap. At the sanctuary, visitors are asked to keep a low voice, avoid flash photography, not touch or disturb the butterflies, follow the guide's instructions, and avoid littering out of respect for the site.

The package includes round-trip transportation from the meeting point, a professional bilingual guide, and entrance to both the Monarch Butterfly Sanctuary and the Velo de Novia Waterfall. Lunch and beverages are not included.
