Chichen Itza Ik Kil Cenote Valladolid Small Group
La experiencia
This small-group day trip from Playa del Carmen strings together three of the Yucatan's signature stops in a single outing: the Chichen Itza archaeological site, the dramatic open-air Ik Kil cenote, and the colonial streets of Valladolid, all with hotel pickup, lunch, and a professional guide built into the day. Capped at 10 travelers, the tour trades the anonymity of a full-size coach for a more personal pace.
The day begins with round-trip hotel pickup and drop-off from lodgings across the Riviera Maya corridor between Moon Palace and Tulum, including Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen (pickup is not offered from Cancun or Costa Mujeres, and stays with unpaved access, pedestrian-only streets, or addresses in Tulum's Hotel Zone are assigned a nearby meeting point instead, with pickup time confirmed the afternoon before). On the way, guests are offered juice, fruit, and cookies to snack on. At Chichen Itza, the guide leads a roughly three-hour walk through the site, taking in the Kukulkan pyramid, the Temple of the Warriors, the Temple of Venus, the observatory, the building known as La Iglesia, and the ballcourt, with the tour skipping the ticket line entirely since access is arranged in advance.
From the ruins, the group heads to Ik Kil, one of the Yucatan's most recognizable cenotes, for roughly two hours of swimming in its cavernous, vine-draped sinkhole; life jackets and lockers are provided on site. A buffet lunch is served at the cenote's restaurant, with one drink included and bottled water provided throughout the day. The final stop is Valladolid, where the group spends about an hour taking in the colonial city before heading back.
The small-group cap of 10 travelers makes this a better match for people who want a more intimate dynamic and a guide who can actually answer questions along the way, rather than getting lost in a large tour bus crowd. It suits travelers with at least a moderate level of physical fitness, given the walking involved at the archaeological site and the swimming portion at the cenote; it's not recommended for anyone with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or who is pregnant.
One important logistical note: the Chichen Itza entrance fee itself is not included in the tour price and must be paid in cash upon boarding, at $45 USD per adult and $5 USD per child. What the tour does eliminate is the ticket line at Chichen Itza, since access is pre-arranged so the group can walk straight in. Beyond that mandatory cash payment, everything else covered above, guide, transport, lunch, snacks, drinks, and cenote entrance and equipment, is included in the tour package.
Because pickup times are only confirmed the afternoon before departure, it's worth having your hotel name and lobby details ready at the time of booking and checking your confirmation the day before. If you book last-minute, after 6pm the day prior to the tour, the operator needs to confirm availability directly; if no confirmation comes through, a refund is processed instead. Given the pool time at Ik Kil, packing a swimsuit, towel, and sun protection alongside cash for the entrance fee will help the day go smoothly.
