Punta Laguna Adventure with Mayan Ceremony
La experiencia
Punta Laguna sits inland from the coast as a nature reserve known for its populations of spider monkeys and pumas, and this tour uses it as the base for a day built around a Mayan ceremony, a zip-line crossing, a rappel descent into a cenote, and a visit to a local Mayan village. It runs about six hours and is arranged around hotel pickup rather than a fixed meeting point.
Pickup happens between 7 and 8 in the morning, and the day begins with an ancestral Mayan ceremony before the group heads out to spot spider monkeys and howler monkeys in the reserve. The lagoon crossing itself is done by zip-line on the way out and by traditional Mayan canoe on the way back, giving two different ways of experiencing the water and the surrounding jungle in the same stretch of the tour.
From the lagoon, the route continues to a private cenote, where the descent is made by rappel rather than stairs or a ramp, dropping into water inside the jungle before the swim. After the cenote, the group visits a Mayan village for a meal made with regional ingredients, including homemade corn tortillas and fresh fruit drinks, prepared by the local community rather than catered in from outside. The day closes with a jungle hike to take in the flora and fauna of the area on foot before heading back.
The combination of a rappel entry into the cenote and a zip-line crossing of the lagoon makes this a more physically active version of a cenote-and-nature-reserve day than most, and it's built for travelers who want that added challenge alongside the cultural elements of the ceremony and the village meal. A moderate level of physical fitness is expected, and it's not recommended for pregnant travelers or anyone with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health, given the rappelling and zip-lining involved.
Transportation is handled directly: the guide arrives at your location in an SUV or van at the agreed time, so there's no separate meeting point to track down. Entrance fees to the nature reserve and the lunch at the Mayan village are included, along with the zip-line and rappel activities themselves, so the main things to plan for are swimwear and a towel for the cenote and rappel, plus comfortable footwear for the jungle hike and general walking around the reserve.
Because the tour moves through monkey habitat, a lagoon, a private cenote, and a working Mayan village in one continuous route, it works well for travelers who'd rather have an active, hands-on day than a passive sightseeing loop, provided the physical demands of rappelling and zip-lining fit their fitness level and any medical considerations.
