Bioluminescence Experience in Holbox

This is a night-time bioluminescence outing on Isla Holbox, built around snorkeling gear and a guided visit to the spot where the plankton lights up the water. The activity lasts 90 minutes and the operator runs it entirely on the island, with pick-up included for guests staying in Holbox.

Everything starts at your accommodation. On the day of your booking, the equipment for the activity is handed out where you are staying: a long wetsuit, a mosquito mask, special water shoes and professional snorkeling masks. At the time agreed beforehand, a SECTUR-certified guide collects you in a buggy and drives you to the place where the tour takes place.

Because bioluminescence depends on the dark, the schedule is tied to the moon. Departure times change with the lunar cycle, and the operator confirms yours the day before your reserved date. The tour is also subject to weather conditions and cannot run on full-moon nights, so it is worth planning your dates with that in mind.

The operator says it works with sanitation measures for the equipment and covers minor medical expenses up to five thousand pesos. If the bioluminescence cannot be seen during your tour, it offers to reschedule the date or refund your money. Read those terms when you book, as they come from the operator.

The tour suits all fitness levels, and infants must sit on an adult’s lap. It is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. Since the wetsuit, mask, water shoes and snorkeling equipment are all provided, you mostly need to be ready to be picked up at the agreed time.

Meals and drinks are not included, and the pick-up service only covers Isla Holbox: the operator does not offer transportation outside the island. If you are staying elsewhere, plan to reach the island first.
