Holbox: Fishing Snorkeling in Cabo Catoche with Ceviche

This 330-minute outing from Holbox combines traditional Mexican fishing and snorkeling at Cabo Catoche, and ends with a ceviche made from your own catch. It begins with a 45-minute ride to Cabo Catoche, which the operator describes as a good spot for both activities thanks to its rich and diverse marine life.

On arrival you are given all the equipment for an authentic Mexican-style fishing session. You learn the names of the local species as you go, and you fish for around two hours. What you catch is not guaranteed: fishing depends on several factors, and the operator is upfront that a big catch cannot be promised.

Next comes snorkeling, where you may see turtles, fish and coral reefs. Snorkeling conditions depend on the weather, so the operator cannot guarantee perfect visibility either, though it is usually rewarding.

After the water time, the captain prepares a Mexican ceviche from the fish you caught, served with crispy totopos and guacamole. The day then continues with a stop at the Santa Paula River, where Holbox Island is separated from the mainland, with time to walk and take pictures before heading back.

It suits friends and families who want a full day on the water. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, but not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, for pregnant travelers, or for those with poor cardiovascular health. Drinks (water and sodas), snorkel gear, fishing equipment, pick-up, and snacks and lunch (fruit, guacamole and ceviche) are included. Drop-off is not.
