Holbox Kayak Bioluminescence Experience

This night kayak tour on Holbox is built around bioluminescence, the natural glow produced by microorganisms in the water. Paddling is fun by day, and the operator invites you to try it at night, under the stars and in luminescent water. The full outing lasts about 105 minutes.

After a briefing with instructions, you take your kayak and paddle roughly 2 kilometers toward Punta Mosquito, leaving the light pollution behind and staying within the navigation limits. The guides head for the areas with the best concentration of plankton and the best visibility, and say they take you to safe areas.

If the tide is low, you also walk on the Punta Mosquito sandbank, where blue or green dots light up in every footprint and handprint. Later you go a little deeper to swim, and each movement sets off thousands of luminescent microorganisms, sometimes like a neon light around you.

If the sky is clear, you may also see the Milky Way and, depending on the hour, some planets and shooting stars. Because this is a natural phenomenon, the intensity can vary from 20% to 100%, and so can the tone. The operator also notes that the experience is interactive and explains how the phenomenon works.

You need at least a moderate level of physical fitness for this tour. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, back problems, recent surgeries, poor cardiovascular health, or for pregnant travelers. Public transportation options are available nearby.

The price includes a dry bag, life jackets, ground transportation and kayak equipment. Private transportation, bottled water and gratuities are not included. Your taxi or guide will arrive with your information, so check that it is for the tour you booked. The taxi can sometimes be a few minutes late, because all travelers are picked up and street conditions are poor, so the operator asks for a little patience.
