Magic Night of Stargazing and Bioluminescence

This evening kayak outing on Holbox Island combines stargazing with a chance to see bioluminescence. It is a quiet, gentle activity: you paddle along the coast at night to reach some of the darkest corners of the island, far from the light pollution of the hotels. The whole experience lasts about 105 minutes.

Your bilingual guide, described as trained and experienced, starts with an explanation of the night sky, including the constellations of the zodiac that may appear that evening. You then paddle for only 15 or 20 minutes before reaching the sandbanks, where the show begins.

There, the sand and water glow with a neon blue light each time you stir, or oxygenate, the water. The guide describes the stars and constellations that appear as you take in the glow, and on suitable occasions you can also swim in it. The operator notes that this is possible in the autumn months, and that the darkest nights are the best for kayaking to see the phenomenon.

Because both the sky and the bioluminescence depend on darkness, the experience is aimed at travelers who like quiet nature activities rather than fast-paced ones. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Specialized infant seats are available for the transfer, and public transportation options are available nearby.
