Whale Shark and Snorkeling Adventure from Isla Holbox

This is a six-hour boat trip from Isla Holbox to swim and snorkel with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world. According to the operator, they visit Holbox every year, can reach around 14 meters in length and are totally harmless, so you swim alongside them.

During the boat trip you may also see turtles, giant manta rays, dolphins, flamingos and many other species. What you see varies from day to day, so treat these as possibilities rather than promises.

The season officially starts on May 15, but the arrival of the whale sharks in the area varies each year. Ask about the timing before you choose your date. The tour also depends on favorable weather: if it is cancelled because of poor weather, you are offered an alternative date or a full refund.

The trip is meant for people who are comfortable in the water with a snorkel. It suits all fitness levels, but children under 6 are not allowed, and it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health.

The tour includes a light breakfast of coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt and sweet buns, plus snorkeling equipment, cold water and sodas, and the operator’s ceviche. If you do not eat fish, guacamole or mango is offered instead.

Gratuities and the taxi to and from the meeting point are not included, so plan your own way there.
