Whale Shark Group Adventure from Isla Holbox

This is a full-day group excursion from Isla Holbox to swim with whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, in the waters where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico. The day lasts about seven hours, with a bilingual guide leading the group, and combines the whale shark encounter with snorkeling and a fresh ceviche lunch.

The day starts with a light breakfast of coffee, tea, fruit, yogurt and sweet buns. If you do not want to eat there, you can take some fruit from the breakfast table with you on the tour. Then you head out by boat from Isla Holbox to look for the whale sharks and swim with them. Despite the name, the animal can reach around 45 feet (14 meters) in length and allows a close-up encounter with your guide beside you.

The waters here are also home to other sea life, and you may see sea turtles, manta rays and dolphins along the way. After the swimming, the boat heads back toward the mainland, where you snorkel with the gear provided.

The day ends with lunch: fresh ceviche made with the day's catch. For those who do not eat fish, guacamole and mango are offered instead. The included drinks are bottled water and soft drinks.

This tour asks for some preparation. Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and children under 6 are not allowed. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers, or for those with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Whale shark season runs from mid-May to mid-September, although the sharks may arrive in the area later. The trip depends on favorable weather; if it is cancelled because of poor weather, you are offered an alternative date or a full refund.

The price covers the bilingual guide, snorkeling equipment, government fees, a boat with GPS, breakfast, ceviche and drinks. Gratuities and private transportation are not included.
