Balloon Flight in Teotihuacan + Breakfast in La Gruta and Transportation

4.977 verified reviews

This early-morning experience combines a hot air balloon flight over the Teotihuacan pyramids with breakfast at La Gruta, a restaurant inside a natural volcanic tube on a dormant volcano, and round-trip transport from Mexico City (listed as optional). The listing describes the flight as taking place at dawn, with the Sun and Moon pyramids seen from above as the light comes up.

The day starts very early. Pickup runs from about 4:20 to 4:50 a.m. from selected hotels or Airbnbs in Mexico City, with the exact time confirmed a day in advance. At about 5:45 a.m. you reach the balloonport, where coffee, tea and biscuits are served while the balloons are prepared. The flight begins around 6:10 a.m. and lasts between 30 and 50 minutes, reaching heights of up to 10,000 feet. After landing, around 7:30 a.m., there is a traditional flying ceremony with a toast with the pilot and a commemorative flight certificate.

Breakfast follows at about 8:00 a.m. in La Gruta, which the listing calls the original and most emblematic cave restaurant in the area. Because of high demand and set hours, there may be waiting times to get in. At about 9:00 a.m. there is a guided visit to a traditional obsidian and maguey workshop, where local experts explain how the ancient Teotihuacans used volcanic stone in daily life, trade and rituals, and where you taste artisan spirits made in the region.

At about 10:00 a.m. you get one hour of free time in the archaeological zone to walk among the pyramids at your own pace. Admission is not included and costs approximately 10 USD (210 MXN) per person. Around 11:00 a.m. you return to Mexico City, to the same point where you were picked up.

Plan around the caveats in the listing. All times are approximate and the flight depends entirely on the weather; flying right over the archaeological zone cannot be guaranteed, though the listing says that in 95% of cases it is possible to fly over or very close to Teotihuacan. It is a complete tour, so if you leave before the last stop, the return to the city is at your own expense. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with poor cardiovascular health, and a charge of 40 MXN per extra kilo applies after 100 kg. Pickup covers Polanco, Condesa, Roma Norte, Roma Sur, Reforma and the Historic Center; other areas can be coordinated. Wheelchair users should ask the operator in advance.
