Xochimilco, Coyoacan and Frida Kahlo with Optional Lunch
The experience
This full-day tour, called the Colors of Mexico adventure in the listing, covers three areas of southern Mexico City: Coyoacán, Xochimilco and the University Campus. It runs for about 540 minutes and ends up being a good sampler of the city's history, art and everyday life. Lunch is optional and only included in the Full Experience option.
You begin in Coyoacán, one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city, dating back to pre-Hispanic times. You walk its cobblestone streets and past 16th-century mansions while your guide explains the area's colonial legacy and how it became a cultural hotspot that drew artists and intellectuals. Allow roughly an hour for this stretch.
Depending on the option you book, you then visit either the Frida Kahlo Museum, also known as Casa Azul or the Blue House, where the artist lived with Diego Rivera, or Casa Kahlo, a newer exhibition space with immersive and interactive displays about her life and legacy. Each visit is around 60 minutes. The listing is explicit that you visit only one of the two, and that Casa Kahlo is not the artist's former home and does not include entry to the original Blue House.
The afternoon belongs to Xochimilco. You board a trajinera, a colorful, flat-bottomed boat, for about an hour on the chinampa canals, passing floating gardens while the boatman moves the vessel with a pole. Your guide explains how the chinampas developed and why the area is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Food and drink sold from other boats, such as mole, quesadillas, tacos, carnitas, pulque and micheladas, are at your own expense, and you may hear mariachi music from nearby boats.
On the way you also stop at the University Campus to see the Juan O'Gorman and Diego Rivera murals on the central library, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to look at the Olympic Stadium from the outside. The order of the activities can change depending on availability at the Frida Kahlo Museum.
The tour suits visitors who want art, history and a boat ride in one day and who are comfortable with a long outing. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, and the listing recommends comfortable clothes and walking shoes. The guide speaks English or Spanish, the visits themselves are monolingual and the transport time is bilingual. Drinks and tips are not included. Infants must travel in an approved child restraint on the bus, which you need to bring yourself, and a seat fee applies.
