Hidden Gems of Nayarit: A Private Coastal Escape

This private tour takes you away from the busier parts of Puerto Vallarta and into the culture of Nayarit, the state just north. It is priced for up to 4 people, and the operator says larger groups are welcome if you email for details. You are met at convenient locations throughout Puerto Vallarta and Banderas Bay, then driven in private comfort to three beach towns: Lo de Marcos, Los Ayala and Guayabitos.

The drive to Lo de Marcos takes about one hour, more or less depending on where you start. The itinerary describes a sleepy town with the most colorful murals in the area, where nature meets the typical architecture of a small Mexican beach town. You can taste authentic Mexican cocoa and stroll through the colorful streets. The itinerary allows about 120 minutes here.

Next comes Los Ayala, 20 minutes further north. It is mainly visited by locals because one of the most beautiful beaches in the area, Frideras, is here. To reach it you walk about 10 minutes along a trail through the jungle, and the operator describes it as an untouched beach away from the crowds. The itinerary allows about 90 minutes.

The last stop is Guayabitos, the largest of the three towns, in Jaltemba Bay. You walk streets full of handicrafts, with souvenirs, art, jewelry and traditional clothing to shop for, stop for lunch at a beachfront restaurant known for seafood, and cool off on the beach. Coral Island, just in front of Guayabitos, can be visited as an optional extra with an additional cost. On the way back the group stops at traditional Mexican candy stalls along the road. This last block is listed at about 180 minutes.

The tour suits couples, families and small groups looking for a slower day. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, though the walk to Frideras Beach is on a jungle trail. Infants and small children can ride in a pram or stroller, and infants are required to sit on an adult's lap. Public transportation options are available nearby.

The price includes a certified guide, a city tour of Guayabitos, Lo de Marcos and Los Ayala, pickup and drop-off, air conditioning in the vehicle and bottled water. Lunch, gratuities and the water taxi to Coral Island are not included.
