The History of Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta was founded in 1851 as a port for exporting coffee, timber, and minerals from the Sierra Madre. Originally called "Las Peñas," it was renamed in 1918 after Ignacio L. Vallarta, former governor of Jalisco. For decades it remained an isolated fishing town accessible only by boat or plane.

Puerto Vallarta's transformation into a world-class tourist destination began in 1963 when John Huston filmed "The Night of the Iguana" here with Richard Burton. Burton's public romance with Elizabeth Taylor turned the city into a Hollywood romance symbol, drawing global attention and triggering a tourist boom.

Today, Puerto Vallarta receives over 4 million visitors per year. It is recognized as one of Mexico's most tolerant and LGBTQ+-friendly cities, with a thriving arts and cultural scene in the Romantic Zone.

shield Is Puerto Vallarta Safe?

Puerto Vallarta is considered one of Mexico's safest tourist destinations. The main tourist zones (Romantic Zone, Malecón, Marina, Hotel Zone) are well-lit, well-frequented, and safe day and night. The city has a strong tourist police presence.

Practical tips: Use official taxis (Uber works well) rather than street taxis. Avoid displaying cameras or jewelry in busy areas. Boat trips to Yelapa and the Marietas Islands are always operated by licensed tour operators.

Puerto Vallarta is especially welcoming to the LGBT+ community — the Romantic Zone is one of Mexico's liveliest gay neighborhoods with specialized bars, clubs, and hotels.

Puerto Vallarta is famous for its stunning Pacific beaches along Banderas Bay, its iconic Malecón boardwalk, the historic cobblestone Romantic Zone, world-class whale watching (November–March), Las Marietas Islands, jungle zip-lining in the Sierra Madre, vibrant nightlife, an LGBTQ+-friendly atmosphere, and excellent seafood and Mexican cuisine.

When is whale watching season in Puerto Vallarta?

expand_more
Humpback whale season in Puerto Vallarta runs from November to March, with peak activity in January and February. During this time, whales migrate to Banderas Bay from Alaska to breed and calve in the warm Pacific waters. You may also spot orcas, dolphins, manta rays, and sea turtles year-round.

How do I get to Puerto Vallarta?

expand_more
Puerto Vallarta is served by Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport (PVR), which receives direct international flights from the US, Canada, and Europe. By road, it is about 5–6 hours from Guadalajara (370 km) and 10+ hours from Mexico City. Most international visitors fly directly into PVR. Private transfers from the airport to hotels are the most comfortable option.

What are the Las Marietas Islands?

expand_more
The Marietas Islands are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and marine protected area about 35 km offshore from Puerto Vallarta. They are famous for the "Hidden Beach" (Playa del Amor / Playa Escondida) — a beach inside a volcanic crater accessible only by swimming through a short sea cave. The islands also offer outstanding snorkeling with sea turtles, rays, and diverse reef fish.

Is Puerto Vallarta safe for tourists?

expand_more
Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's safest tourist destinations and has maintained a strong safety record for decades. The tourist zones (Romantic Zone, Malecón, Marina, Hotel Zone) are well-patrolled and safe for walking day and night. As with any destination, avoid flashing valuables, use registered taxis or ride apps, and stay in tourist-frequented areas. The city is particularly welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers.

What is the best beach in Puerto Vallarta?

expand_more
Puerto Vallarta has many excellent beaches: Playa Los Muertos (most central, most social — best for people-watching and water sports), Playa Conchas Chinas (calm, snorkeling), Playa Gemelas (quieter, south of town), and Playa de Oro (good for families near the Hotel Zone). Beyond PV, Sayulita (45 min north), Punta Mita, and Yelapa (accessible by boat) offer more secluded Pacific experiences.

What should I eat in Puerto Vallarta?

expand_more
Must-try dishes include fresh ceviche and aguachile (raw seafood marinated in lime juice), pescado zarandeado (wood-fire grilled whole fish — a Nayarit specialty), birria tacos, shrimp and octopus cocktails, tamales colados, and fresh tropical fruits. The Romantic Zone has the best restaurant concentration. The Mercado Municipal is ideal for budget-friendly authentic Mexican breakfasts.
