Hidden Historic Heart of Puerto Vallarta

The route starts by walking through the Puerto Vallarta Municipal Sports Complex and then continues through central historic areas away from the usual tourist circuit. Most of the walk is on cobblestone streets, sidewalks and stairways of Old Vallarta, with a few blocks of the Malecon and a stretch along Los Muertos beach, the most popular beach in town.

Along the way you visit a cemetery and two traditional Mexican shopping pavilions where families buy meat, fish and vegetables. There is also a stop at a small family factory where you learn about tortillas. The walk passes through the lanes of Gringo Gulch, made famous by the vacation home of American actress Elizabeth Taylor and her husband Richard Burton.

You then have the option to climb hundreds of stairs to the Mirador de la Cruz, a lookout high above the historic downtown. In season, whales can be seen from there. Because of the stairs and cobblestones, the tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, for pregnant travelers or for those with poor cardiovascular health, and a moderate level of fitness is expected.
