Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach

Marietas Islands Snorkel Tour & Hidden Beach

4.8 1,031 verified reviews

This boat tour takes you to the Marietas Islands for snorkeling and, when conditions allow, a visit to the Hidden Beach. The operator, Eco Explorer, describes it as a mix of snorkeling, bird watching and exploring the islands. It runs from Tuesday to Sunday and departs from Marina Vallarta at around 9:00 AM.

The trip starts on the water. About ten minutes after leaving, the boat reaches the mouth of the Ameca River, a scenic spot where dolphins are sometimes seen feeding in the morning. About an hour into the trip you arrive at the islands. In the winter months the crossing itself can be part of the experience, since the ocean often brings sightings of dolphins, sea turtles, manta rays and even whales.

Once at the islands, the team hands out snorkel gear and life jackets and explains how to use the equipment, with tips to improve your skills in the water. Access to the Hidden Beach cannot be guaranteed because of weather and natural conditions, although the operator says it does its best to secure entry. A 30 dollar deposit is required and is refundable if access is denied for those reasons. A private option is also offered for up to 4 guests, with extra guests possible for an added cost; ask the operator when booking.

The park is plastic-free, so bring your own reusable water bottle. Cups are available, but reusable bottles are encouraged. The tour includes light snacks of apples, bananas and a sandwich, the scenic boat ride, a qualified guide, snorkeling equipment, a life vest and the official permits for the Marietas Islands National Park. It also covers the CONANP bracelet and the conservancy donation to Bahia Unida.

Age rules are strict. Access to the Hidden Beach starts at 10 years old with an adult in the same group, and both need ID. The maximum age for the Hidden Beach is 65, also with ID. The snorkeling tour is for ages 6 to 70, and for families the listing suggests the private tour. Pregnant travelers and people under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not allowed. Entrance fees, lunch, government fees and gratuities are not included.
