Akumal Bay

Just a short drive north of Tulum along the coastal highway, you will find one of the Caribbean's best-kept secrets: Akumal Bay. In complete contrast to the open drama of Ruins Beach, Akumal is a small, sheltered cove with perfectly calm, crystal-clear waters in shades of turquoise and aquamarine. A natural reef protects the bay from ocean swells, creating conditions that feel more like a natural swimming pool than an open sea.

Framed by palms and low vegetation, the bay offers natural shade along its edges — a welcome bonus when the Yucatan sun is at its peak. The views from the water looking back toward the palms and the gentle curve of the beach are genuinely breathtaking, and the underwater world is just as spectacular: healthy coral formations and a rich variety of reef fish make this one of the best snorkeling spots in the Riviera Maya.

Access to Akumal Bay is straightforward — there is a public beach entrance on the main highway (Federal Highway 307) with a small access point leading directly to the shore. And do not think that Akumal Bay is all about the reef. It also has a very special bonus: this bay is one of the most reliable spots on the entire Yucatan coast to encounter wild sea turtles. Green turtles feed on the seagrass beds in the shallows, and if you snorkel quietly and respectfully, your chances of sharing the water with one of these gentle creatures are genuinely excellent.
