Birdwatching around Merida and coastline

Birdwatching around Merida and coastline

This birdwatching tour explores the birdlife of the Yucatan Peninsula on the outskirts of Merida and along the coastline, following walking paths that cross several types of vegetation in search of endemic, resident and migratory species.

After pickup, you'll transfer for about 45 minutes toward the coastal reserve near Xcambo, where the paths wind through wetlands and mangrove vegetation — a different setting from the drier scrubland closer to the city, and one that draws a different mix of birds.

Here you'll spend around an hour and a half observing flamingos and the many other species that rely on the wetlands of the Yucatan coast, an important habitat for wading birds and a stopover for migratory birds passing through the region.

A short 15-minute transfer then takes you to Xtampu, where the focus shifts from birdwatching to local history: a guided visit to the salt mine explains the traditional mining process and introduces you to Mayan descendants who still work the salt flats using techniques passed down through generations.

The tour suits travelers of all physical fitness levels, since it's built around walking on established paths, though it is not recommended for pregnant travelers. Families can bring infants and small children, who may ride in a pram or stroller, and specialized infant seats are available in the vehicle.

Pickup and drop-off are at your hotel or Airbnb in Merida city, and the air-conditioned vehicle carries the binoculars, bottled water and snacks you'll use along the way. Counting the transfers to and from downtown Merida, plan on the full outing lasting about six hours.
