Boat Trip to the Biosphere Reserve in Celestún from Mérida

4.0 2 verified reviews

This boat trip takes you from Mérida to the biosphere reserve at Celestún, on the Yucatán coast. It pairs a wildlife-oriented boat ride through the mangroves with a long stay at the beach and a meal of regional food, all with transportation from the city.

The boat ride is described as about two hours. Stops include Bird Island, a sanctuary for local and migratory birds; the point where the sea and the estuary meet and fresh water mixes with salt water; the Horseshoe Ruins, a hidden archaeological site; a flamingo viewing area; a mangrove tunnel with narrow waterways; and a freshwater spring called the water hole. There is also a Mayan clay bath with mineral-rich clay said to be good for the skin, so bring a swimsuit if you want to try it. Restrooms are available at the pier.

After the boat, the itinerary lists about three hours at Celestún beach, from 12:15 to 3:15 p.m., to eat at the restaurant, swim and explore the surroundings. The beach has lounge chairs, a swing, bathrooms and showers, and the operator says the menu is in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the booking page. About 15 minutes are set aside at the center of town, where the Celestún letters stand, for photos.

The trip back to Mérida runs from 3:15 to 4:45 p.m., with an extra stop at a local stand selling coconut products such as water, popsicles and creams. You are due back around 4:45 to 5:15 p.m. at the meeting point where you were picked up. The operator states that pickup is only at Santa Ana Park and asks for your contact details so you can be reached at pickup time.

Included are regional food (chicken or fish), transportation, the boat ride, wildlife viewing and a certified bilingual guide. Tips, dessert and drinks are extra. Bring biodegradable insect repellent, sunscreen, towels, a swimsuit, extra clothes, water and some cash. It suits all fitness levels but is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers or those with poor cardiovascular health. The tour is subject to availability, so contact the operator once you book; the itinerary may change without notice.
