Celestún Mangrove Exploration & Beach Escape from Mérida

This tour takes you from Mérida to Celestún, a protected stretch of the Yucatán coast known for its mangrove reserve. The day combines a boat trip through the estuary with free time on the beach, and it suits people who enjoy nature, birdlife and a relaxed day by the water.

The boat ride is described as lasting about two hours. Along the way you visit Bird Island, a sanctuary for local and migratory birds, and the point where the sea meets the estuary, where fresh water mixes with salt water. The route also includes the Horseshoe Ruins, a hidden archaeological site, and a viewing area where flamingos can be seen in their natural habitat.

The boat then enters the mangrove tunnel, a narrow waterway lined with dense vegetation, and stops at a freshwater spring the operator calls the water hole. Another stop is the Mayan clay bath, where you can apply mineral-rich clay that is said to be good for the skin; wear a swimsuit if you want to take part. After the boat trip, the rest of the outing is free time at Celestún beach to swim, rest or sunbathe. Restrooms are available at the pier.

The tour includes round-trip transportation from Mérida, a certified guide, the boat ride and one dish to choose between fish and chicken. Drinks at the restaurant are not included. Pickups are only offered at set meeting points, and the operator assigns the one closest to your hotel. The operator also warns that, on some occasions, you may be told without prior notice to come to their office on your own, so keep your contact details up to date.

Bring sunscreen, a hat, mosquito repellent, biodegradable sunblock, a swimsuit, a change of clothes, a towel, sunglasses and comfortable shoes. A life vest is mandatory on the boat. The tour suits all fitness levels, but it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers or people with poor cardiovascular health.
