Chichen Itza Full Day Tour
The experience
This full-day tour from Mérida visits Chichén Itzá, a Maya cenote and the town of Izamal. The operator runs small groups and presents the day as a comfortable, close-to-the-guide experience. The departure is at 6:00 a.m. so that you reach Chichén Itzá early, ahead of the crowds and the heat.
The day starts at the meeting points, and then the group drives to the archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá. On the way, your guide gives a general background on Maya culture so that you understand the site better. At the ruins you have about 60 minutes with the guide and 60 minutes of free time for photos and exploring. The guides are described as experts and Maya descendants. Arriving among the first means no lines, no crowds, better photos and less midday heat.
From Chichén Itzá you go to the Xcajum cenote, where you have time to cool off in clear water. The visit is followed by a buffet with the main dishes of Yucatecan gastronomy, plus international and vegetarian options. Cenote and lunch together take about two hours. Note that the listing lists cenote admission as not included, though lunch is included.
You then drive to Izamal, known as the yellow town and recognized as a Magic Town. On the way the guide tells you about the town's history. Once there you can climb the temple of Kinich Kak Moo, one of the largest temples of Maya culture, then go to the convent of San Antonio de Padua for photographs and to try marquesitas. After that the group returns to Mérida, ending at the same meeting points where you were picked up.
Practical notes: the price includes lunch, air conditioning in the vehicle and a certified guide. Entrance fees, including national admission to Chichén Itzá, tips and admission to the cenote are not included, so bring cash for them. The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels, but it is not recommended for pregnant travelers, travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. Infants sit on an adult's lap. Service animals are allowed, and public transportation options are available nearby. The listing does not list the meeting points, so confirm them when you book.
