Excursion to Celestun Biosphere and Beach Day from Merida
The experience
This excursion takes you from downtown Mérida to the Celestún Biosphere Reserve, on the Yucatán coast, and then to a beach. The operator describes the reserve as a multicolored place with wildlife, mangroves and fresh water springs, and the main goal of the boat ride is to see flamingos in their natural habitat. The itinerary lists a total of 450 minutes.
The first part of the day is the guided boat tour, about 120 minutes according to the itinerary. It goes through the estuary and the mangroves, past the bird island, and includes a visit to a freshwater spring. Along the way you will see various bird species and possibly crocodiles and other wild animals. A bilingual guide accompanies you throughout, with translation help if needed, and the tour is described as a guided interpretive nature tour.
After the reserve, the group drives to Celestún Beach, just 20 minutes away. The itinerary allows about 180 minutes there. You can swim in the ocean, enjoy local cuisine and use the beach club facilities, which include loungers, showers, a pool, hammocks, restaurant service and beach access, and spend the rest of the afternoon relaxing.
The tour is listed as suitable for all physical fitness levels, and infants are required to sit on an adult's lap. It works well for visitors who want a nature outing with a slow beach afternoon.
Flamingos need a realistic expectation. The best season is typically from mid-November through March, when larger numbers are usually present. From April to mid-November sightings are highly inconsistent, and on some days only a few flamingos, or none, are seen. Because this is a protected ecosystem, the operator cannot guarantee flamingos or a specific number, and by booking you accept that wildlife sightings depend on natural conditions.
Money is the other practical point. The boat fee is not included in the tour price: it is paid directly at the Ría Celestún tourist dock, where cards are not accepted. Everyone should bring 500 Mexican pesos in cash. Lunch and entrance fees are also excluded; the itinerary calls lunch optional, so ask about it when you book. Bring a swimsuit and sun protection for the beach.
