Maya Wonders Expedition: Chichén Itzá, Izamal & Ikil Cenote

This full-day tour from Mérida links three highlights of Yucatán: the ruins of Chichén Itzá, the Ik Kil cenote and the yellow town of Izamal. It runs with a certified bilingual guide, round-trip transportation and a traditional buffet lunch, and the source describes the day as culturally enriching.

The visit begins with a two-hour guided tour of Chichén Itzá, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You explore its most recognisable structures, including the Temple of Kukulcán (El Castillo), the Great Ball Court, the Temple of the Warriors and the Sacred Cenote. The guide shares stories and context on Maya astronomy, architecture, religion and daily life.

The next stop is Cenote Ik Kil, an open-air cenote about 26 metres (85 feet) below ground level, reached by a carved stone staircase. Vines hang down into deep blue water, and you have about an hour and a half to swim, take photos and relax. Life vests are included and mandatory, and lockers are available for your belongings. Drinks are not allowed inside the cenote.

The lunch is a traditional buffet at a local restaurant, served with flavoured water; other beverages are not included. The last stop is Izamal, known as the Yellow City or City of Three Cultures for its mix of pre-Hispanic, colonial and contemporary influences. There you visit the Convent of San Antonio de Padua, built on a Maya pyramid, with its courtyard, gardens and small museum, climb the Kinich Kakmó pyramid for views over the town, and take a photo with the IZAMAL letters in the central square. You then head back to Mérida in the late afternoon.

This tour suits travellers who want archaeology, swimming and a colonial town in a single day. Note that it is not recommended for travellers with spinal injuries, pregnant travellers or people with poor cardiovascular health, and that pets are not allowed.

On the practical side, bring biodegradable sunscreen and sunglasses, towels, a swimsuit and a change of clothes, and wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The source is not consistent about costs: entrance fees appear both in the inclusions (cenote entrance) and as an exclusion, and it lists admission fees of 310 MXN for Mexican residents and 697 MXN for foreign visitors, with valid ID required for the local rate. Confirm at booking what you pay on the day. Pick-ups are only from the operator's meeting points, assigned by proximity to your hotel, and the tour needs at least four people to run; otherwise you will be notified. Smoking is not allowed in the vehicles.
