Mayan Train Adventure Chichen Itza Cenote and Izamal
The experience
This excursion adds a different way to reach Chichen Itza: the Mayan Train. You meet the operator at a meeting point in Mérida, ride to the Teya station and board the train to Chichen Itza. The plan then continues with a cenote swim, a buffet and a stop in Izamal, and the itinerary lists a total of 750 minutes.
The day begins with the meeting at the agreed points and a transfer to Teya Station in Mérida, about 30 minutes. There you board the Mayan Train for a ride of around 90 minutes to the Chichen Itza station, where a van takes the group to the archaeological site. The operator says you will have a chance to buy tickets, use the restrooms and enter quickly to be among the first to tour the area.
Inside the archaeological zone you get 1 hour and 20 minutes with a certified guide, who explains the history of Chichen Itza in detail, plus 40 minutes to explore on your own. It is described as two hours in total.
From Chichen Itza the van goes to a Mayan cenote where you have one hour to swim and relax, followed by another hour for a typical buffet with a wide variety of dishes. The last stop is Izamal, known as the Yellow Village, with about 80 minutes. There you can climb one of the largest temples in Mexico and tour the Convent of San Antonio de Padua. The group then returns to Mérida, about 90 minutes, and is dropped off at the meeting points chosen at the start.
The tour is listed as suitable for all physical fitness levels. Since it is a long day with train, van and walking, bring what you need for sun and water, and keep in mind that the operator asks for identification.
Documents and payments need attention. To buy the Mayan Train tickets, the operator needs an image of your passport, and identification is requested when boarding. Entrance to Chichen Itza is paid at the destination: 671 MXN for foreign visitors and 298 MXN for Mexican nationals with ID. Entrance to the cenote is 200 MXN, also paid on site. Drinks are not included.
