Private Guided Tour of Merida Iconic Landmarks
The experience
This private, guided walking tour is built around your group, moving through Merida's historic center to see its landmark buildings, plazas and a few spots that are easy to miss on your own, with the itinerary tailored to what you're interested in.
If you don't already have particular sights in mind, your guide can lead you through a route that touches several of the city's landmarks. Parque de la Madre is a small, shaded square built around a white marble monument dedicated to motherhood, next to the historic Church of the Third Order — a good spot to try a marquesita, the crunchy, cheese-filled Yucatecan crepe sold nearby.
Parque de Santa Lucia was historically a resting spot for travelers and their wagons and is now surrounded by restaurants; it's also home to the largest "tu y yo" conversation chair in the city, a popular photo stop. From there, you'll pass the central building of the Universidad de Yucatan, established in the 1920s, known for its Moorish-style architecture, white courtyard and arches.
The Callejon de la Musica, also called Callejon del Congreso, is a pedestrian alleyway lined with plaques honoring the region's composers and poets, and it's often filled with the sound of traditional Trova guitar music. Parque Hidalgo, one of Merida's oldest plazas, is shaded by large trees and framed by historic hotels and outdoor cafes — a good place to pause. Nearby, the Teatro Peon Contreras, named after a local playwright, has a Belle Epoque-style design with a marble staircase and a frescoed dome ceiling.
The route continues to Plaza Grande, Merida's main square, surrounded by colonial buildings and laurel trees, with its own set of giant "tu y yo" chairs and usually filled with vendors and street performers. Facing the square is the Catedral de Merida, built in the late 16th century and considered the oldest cathedral on the American continent — parts of it were built with stones from Mayan temples that once stood on the same site. Nearby, the Iglesia de las Monjas, a 16th-century fortress-like temple originally part of a cloistered convent for Conceptionist nuns, stands out for its crimson facade and distinctive bell tower.
