Private Tour Celestun Flamingo Watching and Beach

This private day trip from Mérida heads to Celestún, on the Yucatán coast, to combine a boat ride through the mangroves of the Celestún River with a stretch of beach time. The main event is the river. Aboard a private boat you glide through mangroves that the operator says are home to 560 animal species. Keep an eye out for tiger herons, gulls, Canadian ducks and crocodiles, and, with some luck, spider monkeys. Celestún is known as one of the main breeding sites of the American flamingo, and from December to March the birds show low flights and courtship displays, so the season is worth keeping in mind when you choose your date.

The boat tour, about an hour and a half, continues to Bird Island to see its birdlife, then enters a mangrove tunnel. If the weather allows, you can swim in the clear freshwater spring hidden among the mangroves, known here as the Water Eye, to cool off.

After the boat ride you drive about 15 minutes to a seaside restaurant serving Yucatecan coastal cuisine, followed by free time on the beach; lunch and beach time together last about 2 hours 45 minutes. A beach club is available if you prefer, but its admission is not included. Note that lunch appears in the exclusions list, so plan to pay for it yourself and confirm the details when booking.

The trip from Mérida to Celestún takes about 1 hour 15 minutes each way. The tour is listed as suitable for all fitness levels, infants can ride in a pram or stroller or sit on an adult's lap, and service animals are allowed.
