Private Tour to Meliponario Maní, Mayapan and Cenote Nahyah

This private day tour from Mérida packs in a Mayan pyramid, a cenote, a historic town, and a meliponario (a sanctuary for stingless Mayan bees) in a single loop through the Yucatán countryside, running about eight and a half hours from pickup to drop-off.

The first stop is Mayapán, one of the last Mayan cities to be inhabited before the conquest. Its architecture shows influence from Chichén Itzá, and you'll also see masks of Chaac, the rain god, echoing the style of Uxmal — evidence, the guide explains, of trade between these cities. After roughly an hour buying tickets (not included, paid on site) and touring the site, the group moves on.

Next is the Nah-yah cenote, a calcareous rock formation shaped by thousands of years of erosion, which reveals a vein of fresh water — an oasis in the middle of the jungle that the Maya regarded as an entrance to the underworld. Entrance is paid directly at the Mayan cooperative's box office, and a life jacket is mandatory. You'll have up to an hour to swim inside.

From the cenote, the tour heads to the magical town of Maní, where Fray Diego de Landa carried out his infamous act of faith, burning most of the Mayan codices because he considered them profane — only three are known to survive today, scattered in museums around the world. In Maní, you'll visit the U Lu'umil Kuxtal meliponario, home to the Mayan Melipona bee, also known as Xunan Kab. Unlike other bees, it has no sting and can be handled safely, and Mayan communities have kept this dark, distinctively flavored honey for hundreds of years for its medicinal and culinary uses. The visit itself has no set cost, though a small contribution is suggested to support the family that maintains it.

After the meliponario, there's time at a local restaurant (food and drinks not included) before a historical walking tour of the town itself, which is where, as the guide notes, this whole chapter of Yucatán's colonial history began.

The pace involves a fair amount of walking and swimming, so it's not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, pregnant travelers, or those with poor cardiovascular health, though it's otherwise suitable for all physical fitness levels.

Private transportation, carbonated beverages, bottled water, and air-conditioned transport are included. Entrance fees, tips, and lunch are not, so plan to bring cash for the pyramid, the cenote, the suggested contribution at the meliponario, and the restaurant stop. Pickup is from your hotel or Airbnb anywhere in Mérida.
