Puuc Route Mayan Archaeological Ruins: Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labnah
The experience
The Puuc Route is a circuit of Maya archaeological sites in the hills south of Mérida, and this full-day tour strings together four of them: Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labná. These are places far less visited than the better-known ruins of the peninsula, which makes them a good choice if you prefer to look at facades and carved stone without a crowd. The tour is led by certified guides who specialize in Maya culture and stay with you the whole way, and the day closes with a homemade Yucatecan meal.
The Puuc style is regarded as one of the most refined decorative arts of the Maya world. As you walk through the sites you will see deities, geometric figures, animals, plants and the stepped-fret patterns that express the Maya view of the cosmos, and your guide explains what they mean. The first stop is Uxmal, where the schedule allots about 90 minutes to the Nuns' Quadrangle, the Birds' Quadrangle, the Governor's Palace and the Soothsayer's Pyramid.
After Uxmal the route continues through the other cities. You will see Codz Pop, a building covered in hundreds of masks dedicated to Chaac, the rain deity, and the palace where the royal family lived, each stop lasting about 45 minutes. Another stop takes in the great North Palace, a viewpoint and the stele of the god of fertility. The last site is Labná, whose main attraction is a finely decorated false arch, the kind of projecting arch that architects and photographers alike single out as a small masterpiece.
Plan for a long day. The itinerary lists a total duration of 555 minutes, including about 1 hour 15 minutes of driving from Mérida to Uxmal, the same on the way back, and roughly two hours in total to move between Uxmal, Kabah, Sayil and Labná. The meal, about an hour, features typical regional food, and vegan options are available if you tell the operator in advance.
The tour is meant for people who are comfortable on their feet: the operator states that travelers should have a high level of physical fitness, and that it is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. On the other hand, the tour is listed as wheelchair accessible, transportation options are wheelchair accessible, service animals are allowed, and infants can ride in a pram or stroller, though they must sit on an adult's lap in the vehicle.
Certified guide, private transportation and regional food are included. Entrance fees to the archaeological sites are not, so bring cash for them. For the meeting point, the source mentions the Fiesta Americana hotel in the hotel zone, very close to the Monument to the Homeland, and says that if you tell the operator which hotel you are staying in, they can pick you up. Look for a driver-guide wearing a shirt with a pyramid logo and the name Esplendor Yucatán.
