Tour Merida the unforgettable and vibrant city of the Mayab

This walking tour introduces you to the colonial heart of Merida, moving through several centuries of history across the city's historic center.

You'll start on Paseo de Montejo, the avenue where Neoclassical mansions line the street and reflect the city's European-influenced architecture, then pass a neo-Mayan sculpture that has become one of the city's landmarks, before continuing through a large, shaded park that's popular for walking and photos.

The route also takes in one of the few Gothic-style churches in Merida and the city's cathedral, described as the first built on the American continent and constructed in part with stones taken from earlier Mayan structures. Nearby, you'll walk among the small pyramids of Tho, the Mayan settlement that once stood where Merida is today.

Further stops include a building that blends Arabic-influenced architecture with a Mayan platform, the first house built in Merida — said to be the only example of Plateresque style in Mexico — and a room dedicated to the Yucatecan painter Fernando Castro Pacheco.

The walk finishes at a lively traditional market, where you'll try regional Yucatecan food, capped off with a tasting of tacos with typical local flavor.

The route is suitable for all physical fitness levels and runs along streets with public transportation nearby; infants are required to sit on an adult's lap rather than in a stroller, and the tour is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health.
