Tour Visit to Campeche

This day trip from Mérida heads to Campeche, the walled colonial port city on the Gulf of Mexico, combining a cenote stop with two of the city's historic forts.

The day starts with a stop at a small cenote on the way to Campeche, where you'll have about thirty minutes to swim in its clear water.

In the city, the first stop is the Fort of San Miguel, perched on a hill overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and considered one of the main historical symbols of San Francisco de Campeche. You'll have about an hour to walk its walls, see its old cannon emplacements and take in panoramic views of the city and the sea; the fort also holds a collection of Mayan archaeological pieces.

The second stop is the Fort of San José el Alto, on high ground north of the city and one of the most imposing fortifications in Campeche's old defensive system, built to guard against pirates and privateers sailing the Gulf. With about an hour here, you can explore its grounds and walls, visit the Museum of Arms and Navigation — which displays historical weaponry, ship models and other military artifacts — and take in another panoramic view of the city.

This suits travelers who want a full day mixing a swim with Campeche's military and colonial history, covering roughly nine hours door to door.
