Tequila Tasting Experience

This tequila tasting takes place on Holbox, the island off Mexico's Yucatán coast, at Tequila O'clock, a bar owned by someone originally from the town of Tequila, in Jalisco. That connection to the spirit's birthplace is what gives the session its footing: it is presented as a way to get to know tequila from people who grew up around it, rather than from a menu.

According to the venue, Tequila O'clock is the only place on the island where you can try more than 50 different tequilas, so the shelves behind the tasting are as much a part of the visit as the glass in your hand. The talk covers how tequila is made and where, which categories and types exist, how people prefer to drink it, and how to tell an authentic bottle from one that only looks the part. You also go through the organoleptic characteristics of the drink, meaning what you see, smell and taste, and you get to check those qualities yourself as you sip instead of just hearing about them.

The tasting starts with a welcome cocktail and continues with three tequilas made from 100% agave: a blanco, a reposado and an añejo. Trying the three side by side is a straightforward way to notice how the categories differ from one another.

The experience suits curious drinkers who want context along with the pour, and people who would like to buy tequila with more confidence afterwards. It is not recommended for pregnant travelers. It is suitable for all physical fitness levels, the venue is wheelchair accessible in all its areas and surfaces, service animals are allowed, and there are public transportation options nearby.
