How to get to Holbox: travel by road to the small port of Chiquilá, on the mainland north coast of Quintana Roo, and take the passenger ferry across the lagoon, a crossing of about 20–30 minutes. Visitors cannot take cars to the island, so whether you come by bus, shuttle, private transfer or rental car, the last leg is always the boat, unless you charter a small plane.

Times are approximate and depend on traffic, stops and the time of the last ferry. Below is how each option works, the route from Cancún and from Tulum, and the small details at Chiquilá that catch first-time visitors out.

How the trip to Holbox works

Holbox is a long, narrow island inside the Yum Balam protected area, separated from the mainland by the shallow Yalahau lagoon. There is no bridge. Every route ends at Chiquilá, a fishing village with a ferry pier, a few shops and car parks. From the dock on Holbox it is a short walk or golf-cart ride to the hotels in the village.

The ferry from Chiquilá

More than one company runs passenger boats between Chiquilá and Holbox, with departures through the day, more frequent in the morning and afternoon and fewer at night. Tickets are sold at the booths on the pier; you do not normally need to buy them in advance. Fares and timetables change, so check the current ones when you arrive or ask your hotel. Two practical points matter more than the exact schedule: the last boat leaves in the evening, so plan your road trip to reach Chiquilá with daylight to spare, and crossings can be suspended in strong wind, especially during winter cold fronts.

Why your car stays on the mainland

Holbox has sand streets and is kept almost car-free: residents get around in golf carts, and visitors are not allowed to bring cars. If you drive, you leave the car in one of the paid car parks in Chiquilá, which are run by local families near the pier. On the island you walk, cycle, take a golf-cart taxi from the dock or rent a cart for the day.

How to get to Holbox from Cancún

Most visitors fly into Cancún International Airport (CUN), which has the most flights in the region. From there you have four ways to reach the ferry.

Private transfer

A driver meets you at the airport or your hotel and takes you straight to the pier in Chiquilá, usually in about two and a half to three hours. It is the most convenient option with luggage, children or a flight that lands in the afternoon, because the driver can go directly without stops and you are not tied to a bus departure. You can arrange one on our Holbox private transfers page.

Shared shuttle

Shared shuttles run from the airport and the hotel zones to Chiquilá at set times, dropping and collecting other passengers on the way. They cost less than a private car and take a little longer. Check whether the ferry ticket is included, since some services bundle it and others do not.

ADO bus

The bus company ADO runs a small number of daily departures from the Cancún bus terminal downtown to Chiquilá, and they are usually timed to connect with the ferry. It is the cheapest option but involves a transfer from the airport to the terminal first, and seats can sell out in high season, so buy your ticket online a day or two ahead and check the current timetable on the ADO site.

Driving yourself

From Cancún, the usual route is the free federal highway 180 west towards Mérida as far as El Ideal, then north through Kantunilkín to Chiquilá. The drive takes about two and a half hours. The last stretch is a two-lane country road with speed bumps (topes) through villages, so avoid driving it after dark if you can.

How to get to Holbox from Tulum

From Tulum the trip is longer, around three and a half to four hours by road to Chiquilá, and there are fewer public options.

  • Private transfer: the simplest choice. The driver picks you up at your hotel or at Tulum's airport and drives straight to the pier.
  • Rental car: the most direct route usually goes inland past Cobá to the highway near Nuevo Xcán, then west to El Ideal and north to Chiquilá. It is a good way to combine Holbox with Cobá or Valladolid on the same trip.
  • Bus: direct buses from Tulum to Chiquilá are few or may not run every day, so many travellers ride to Cancún first and change there. Check ADO for current departures before you plan around a bus.

If you are flying in specifically for Holbox, Cancún is usually the more practical airport even if you are staying in Tulum before or after, because it has more flights and is closer to Chiquilá.

Flying to Holbox

Holbox has a small airstrip at the edge of the village, used by private air taxis and charters in light aircraft. There are no scheduled airline flights from abroad, so you still fly into Cancún or another regional airport and book the light-aircraft hop separately. It saves the long drive and the ferry and gives you a view of the lagoon from above, but the planes are small, luggage limits are strict and the cost per person only makes sense if you split a charter or are very short on time. Flights also depend on the weather.

Tips for arriving on Holbox

  • Bring cash. The island has very few ATMs and they can run out at busy times. Take out pesos in Cancún or Tulum before you leave.
  • Pack light. You carry your bags on and off the boat and across sand streets. A backpack or a small roller is easier than a large suitcase.
  • Time the road trip by daylight. Aim to reach Chiquilá in the afternoon so you are not racing for the last boat or driving the country roads at night.
  • Golf-cart taxis wait at the dock. Have your hotel's name and street ready; many places have no clear numbering.
  • Plan the return. If you have a flight out of Cancún, leave Holbox in the morning and allow at least four to five hours from the ferry to check-in.

Once you are on the island

With the journey sorted, the next decisions are where to stay and what to do. The village by the ferry dock is the easiest base; the hotels further along the beach are quieter but need a golf cart.
