Hernan Cortés' House
The House of Hernán Cortés, like most houses that bear the conqueror's name, was never actually Cortés's home. At least, nothing we see today was ever his house. The photo shows the northwest corner of an enormous complex that stretched across four of today's city blocks, as far as the edge of Avenida Francisco Madero to the southeast. It is the corner of the present-day Zócalo and the Monte de Piedad building. Cortés, in the old Palace of Axayácatl, also called the Old Houses of Moctezuma, built a gigantic "City within the City." He probably lived somewhere in this four-block area. It was the seat of the Marquisate of the Valley of Oaxaca.
